At home I made a model of the Solar System out of ping pong balls, wire and a coat hanger. I enjoyed making it because it was fun and educational. I thank my mum for the brilliant idea.
We were doing research on the planet Pluto to find out more about our solar system. Here are some interesting facts:
The distance from the sun is about 5 900million km
A year is 248.6 Earth years.
It has 1 moon.
Its diameter is 2300km.
It’s the 9th planet in the solar system from the sun.
It is named after the Greek god of the underworld
The temperature is -220°C

Neptune is the eighth planet from the sun and is 4,497 million kilometres away from it. It was probably named after the Roman god of the sea whose name was
Neptune. The length of day on
Neptune is 19.2 hours and the length of year is 165 Earth years. It has 8 moons and the biggest one is called Triton. The average temperature on
Neptune is -220C which is extremely cold.
Neptune’s diameter is 50,000 km and is bigger than the Earth.
Neptune’s surface is made of gas.
Neptune has two rings which are also made of gas.

At Forehill we have been learning about space. We are going to tell you some amazing facts about Saturn. Saturn is about 1,425 million Km (890 million miles) away from the Sun, putting it 6th in the solar system in order from the sun. On Earth a day is 24 hours long but on Saturn there are only ten Earth hours in a day. It takes a year for Earth to orbit the Sun, but Saturn takes 29 Earth years to orbit the sun. Saturn has 18 moons. The average temperature for Saturn is -180C.Saturn was named after the Roman god Saturn, god of agriculture. Did you know that the 3 rings around Saturn are made of thousands of smaller rings made of gas and rocks? Did you know that Saturn is mostly made up of hydrogen?

Distance from the Earth: The closest it has ever been is 348,294m
Diameter: 3,746 km
Temperature: It varies from 105°C to 155°C
Interesting facts: The gravity on the moon is one quarter compared to the Earth.
The world record high jump on the Earth is 2.5m but on the Moon that would be 15m!!!
When we look at the Moon we only ever see one side because that’s the side that’s always facing us.
The Moon never has any weather so if we stood on the moon our footprints would stay there for millions of years!!!

Diameter: 4880 Km
Distance from the sun: 58 million Km
Length of day: 59 Earth days
Length of year: 88 Earth days
Number of moons: 0
Temperature: During the day: 427°C
During the night:-183°C
Place in the Solar System (in order from the sun): 1st (closest to the sun)
How did the planet get its name? Mercury is named after the Roman winged messenger of the gods.
Some interesting facts: Mercury’s core is made up of iron and nickel. Mercury is scorching hot, but at night it turns freezing cold. Because of its thin atmosphere, it’s unable to keep any of the sun’s heat in. Mercury is extremely rocky and is covered in craters and dents because asteroids crash in to the surface.

Planet Mars is the 4th planet from the sun and has two moons named Phobos (meaning fear) and the second one Deimos (meaning terror.)
The average temperature on Mars is -40.C. Mars was named after the Roman god of War.
The distance from the sun is 228 million kilometres.
The length of the day is 24Earth hours and 37 minutes and in a year there are 686.98 Earth days.
Interesting Fact Mars has ice caps at the north and south poles .This is the only water left on the planet They melt slightly in the summer and shrink in size.
Another Interesting Fact The tallest volcano on Mars is called Olympus Mons.

The Earth is third planet in the solar system and is 150 million km from the sun.
The length of Earth’sday is 24 hours and in a year there are 365 days.
The Earth has 1 moon.
The Earth’s name came from the Old English and Germanic language.
Interesting Facts An interesting fact about the Earth is that it is the only planet in our solar system that people live on and it takes a year for the Earth to travel around the sun. By Joanna and Steven
